Q: Pick up Corpas for any of those options?

Manny Corpas
Dan Wheeler
Jeff Francis
Dave Bush
Matt Morris

Rockies web site has Fuentes temporary out as closer.

A: Of the bunch, it’s an easy decision for drop Morris. Yes, he’s been fairly solid this year, but an K:BB ratio that’s not even 2:1 scares me a little. Bush and Francis both offer Ks and now - in theory - Corpas will offer saves. Current reports don’t have Clint Hurdle as completely definite that this change will stay, nor has he officially named a closer. But, from the way Corpas has thrown this year, I’d definitely give it to him over Jorge Julio or LaTroy Hawkins. Watch out for Jeremy Affeldt in this case. He’s got experience closing and he’s pitched just as well.

Q: Abreu was dropped. Options to dump include Hunter Pence, Raul Ibanez, Mark Teahen. All have been producing more than Abreu has (except for maybe Ibanez). Does he turn it around in the 2nd half?

A: Abreu hasn’t been hitting much at all the last week, even though his average for the month of June ended at .290. For his career, Abreu has been a better player in the second half of seasons, hitting .307/.410/.510 compared to a line of .294/.408/.489 in the first half. Nothing substantial, but better. It’s hard to imagine Abreu continuing his streak of bad luck at the plate for the whole season, especially in that lineup. If you have a spot on your bench and you really want him, it’d be worth dropping Pence for him. Pence is striking out way too much and walking too little to keep up this pace. He still hasn’t reach double-digit walks through 56 games.

Q: I am in a 10 team pts league where we start 2 catchers.

I currently have Schneider and Paulino. The FA available are Ross, Zaun, Kendall, Bard, Laird, Olivo, Doumit, Ausmus, and Saltalamacchia.

Which 2 do you like the best
?

A: Even though he won’t start every game at first or catcher, Salty is your man. He’s a perfect second catcher because he’ll get enough playing time to make a difference and won’t hurt you. Of that bunch, he’s really the only one that offers the potential to hit for real power in the second half as well. Top three there, I’d go Salty, Doumit and Zaun.

Q: I picked Felipe Lopez Jr. off the waiver wire yesterday and was offered Robinson Cano for him today, should I do it? This league counts OPS.

A: In a heartbeat. I don’t know what your trading partner is doing to themselves on this one. Lopez has an OPS below .620 and isn’t hitting or getting on base. At least Cano plays on the Yankees.

Q: I’ve been offered Teixeira and Papelbon for Grady Sizemore. I have Conor Jackson as my 1B right now and can slide either Pedroia or Crisp into the hole voided by Sizemore...

A: This would be a good trade, if not for Tex’s injury. Wait to see what will be going on with him after the All-Star break and then revisit this trade. While you’ll miss the plethora of runs that Sizemore will score, Teixeira can still help you in that category and will probably offer much more power-wise.
