There were many critics who basically labeled Lidge as damaged goods this summer, and repeatedly said there was no chance Lidge would ever return to form. There was little interest in the oft-injured closer. However, the Phillies took a gamble. At the time, people believed it was a very bad idea for the Phils. In reality, they traded nothing more than a fourth outfielder who can run and a prospect for a very dynamic closer and a solid utility man. No question about it, the Phillies took a chance this summer. So far, it looked like they have done well.
Lidge has looked absolutely amazing this season. In 36 save opportunities, he has converted them all. Surprising, eh? No, not at all. Everyone knew that Lidge had this in him. It was just a matter of clearing himself up, notably from the 2005 Pujols at bat where he gave up that infamous home run in the NLCS. Many doubters felt that Lidge could never recover and that he might as well say goodbye to being a dominant closer. However, some people felt (me included) that Lidge just needed a change of scenery. Houston was through with him, and Lidge had enough of the team he has spent the six years of his career with.
Brad Lidge came to Philadelphia with rather average expectations. No one was expecting him to be his dominate self, but the fans were excited to see what the new closer could do. Well, Lidge has done enough to earn himself a half decent nickname. Brad “Lights Out” Lidge is flashed upon the jumbo screen whenever the closer is called into the game. The energy of having a dynamite closer is in the air, all around Citizens Park, once Lidge is called in.
How does one magnify Lidge’s success this year? A start would be to mention how Lidge has been perfect in every save opportunity. Tough save after tough save, Lidge has had enough firepower to close every one out. What about the fact he has allowed only two home runs this year? There is also his outstanding K-BB ratio. Lidge has struck out 80 batters all year, while allowing just 29 walks. He has held batters to just a .200 batting average against. How about his miniscule era of just 2.01? Undoubtedly, Lidge has not disappointed anyone. Can he keep it together for the stretch run?
In all, Lidge has had such a turnaround from his last two seasons. After being labeled damaged goods, Lidge has really proven critics wrong. How ridiculous is it to just take in that Lidge has not blown a save? It proves his consistency and his desire to win.
