If you had even heard of Jay McGwire before last Thursday, you were probably a member of the McGwire family.  But Jay McGwire, the estranged brother of slugger Mark McGwire is a man bent on getting his 15 minutes of fame and the millions he imagine will come with it.  Apparently Jay McGwire has written a book which he’s tentatively titled The McGwire Family Secret:  the Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption. 

He claims that he’s doing this out of love.  

“My bringing the truth to the surface is out of love.  I want Mark to live in truth to see the light, to come to repentance so he can live in freedom, which is the only way to live,” Jay McGwire has said about his book.  

But that claim seems extremely shallow coming from a man, who apparently has a failed business -- phones at his fitness center in California have been disconnected, as have his home phones, according to ESPN -- has been overshadowed in fame by his brother and apparently doesn’t even speak with that brother anymore. N

o, once you look beyond the “secret” that Mark McGwire used steroids, the book seems like little more than a get rich scheme by a jealous brother who’d do anything to make money and gain some notoriety.  After all, if it was about redeeming his brother, he wouldn’t need to air the dirty laundry in public, and it wouldn’t hurt if they talked either. 

But that hasn’t happened in a long time.  So Jay McGwire, a body builder and former steroid user himself, who claims to have found God, is cloaking his quest for a big payday in apparent righteousness.  He also tries to take credit for not just Mark McGwire’s accomplishments but for that of other players too. 

“Who knows what might have happened if I didn't get Mark involved with all the training, supplements, the right foods, steroids, and HGH?” Deadspin.com quoted Jay McGwire as writing. Deadspin.com broke the story of Jay McGwire’s attempt at a literary career. “He would not have broken any records, and the congressional hearings would have gone on without him. Maybe Barry Bonds wouldn't have ever gotten involved with the stuff, either.”Recommend article:
