by Frank Bundy
April 12, 2006

Welcome to the first in-season edition of Serious Baseball's Power Rankings.

After an action packed first week this is how the team rank.  This week's biggest climber was the Cincinnati Reds who moved up ten spots.  Three teams share the honor as the club to fall the furthest down the rankings as the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Minnesota Twins all dropped ten spots.

3-4 (3-4) Jim Thome has taken well to his new team this season.  With 2 HR's in 15 AB's, Thome's batting line of .333/.565/.800 shows that he isn't at fault for the defending champions slow start in 2006.

5-2 (5-2) Chris Shelton is on pace to hit 135 HR's!  I honestly see him doing it.
13 18
(+5)
4-2 (4-2) Of all the players on the Giants that are on the wrong side of thirty, what are the odds that one of the players to land on the DL would be 25 year old SP Noah Lowry?
14 24
(+10)
4-2 (4-2) Adam Dunn is batting .381/.444/.714 with 2 HR's so far this season.  One of those HR's cleared the "smokestacks" at the Great American Ballpark last Thursday and traveled 479 feet!
15 9
(-6)
3-4 (3-4) Reliever Ken Ray was the first pitcher to make Barry Bonds swing and miss at three pitches since 2000 this past week.
16 10
(-6)
3-3 (3-3) Three full time players have a 1.000+ OPS to start the season thus far in Toronto: Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, and Troy Glaus.
17 19
(+2)
4-3 (4-3) Brad Penny is off to a great start in 2006 going 2-0 in his first two starts with 14 K's in 12 innings and only 1 walk.

3-3 (3-3) Miguel Batista welcomed himself back to Arizona nicely by striking out 11 Colorado Rockies in seven IP in his first start as a Diamondback in 2006.
19 13
(-6)
1-4 (1-4) The Padres team OPS in it's first five games is .634, and their opponents' OPS is .814...that's how you lose games.
20 28
(+8)
4-2 (4-2) Last season Todd Helton got off to a slow start for the Rockies.  This year that's not the case as he is hitting .400/.586/.650 with 4 RBI in 20 AB's.
21 11
(-10)
1-5 (1-5) Talk about getting lit up!  Phillies' starting pitchers have combined for a 9.56 ERA in only 16 IP thus far this season.
22 12
(-10)
1-5 (1-5) The offense is dead!  The offense is dead!  Twins hitters have combined to post a .243/.282/.414 batting line so far this season.
23 26
(+3)
3-3 (3-3) I don't know how the Devil Rays have even managed to post three wins this season.  Their team ERA is 8.14, and their team OPS is only .775 while their opponents' is 1.042.
24 25
(+1)

25 15
(-10)
2-5 (2-5) Even though every AB took place in his new cozy ballpark (Ameriquest Field in Texas), Brad Wilkerson has not shown a liking to the stadium thus far only batting .188/.212/.344 in 32 AB.
26 20
(-6)
2-4 (2-4) New catcher Ramon Hernandez is absolutely loving life in Baltimore so far batting .688/.700/.813 with 6 RBI in his first 16 AB.
27 23
(-4)
2-5 (2-5) Even though Alfonso Soriano may not want to play left field, he sure isn't letting it affect his bat.  In his first 22 AB's as a National he is hitting .364/.417/.727 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, and has 2 SB's.
28 29
(+1)
2-3 (2-3) With his 3.29 ERA newcomer Scott Elarton has been a pleasant surprise in his first two starts for the Royals even though he is 0-2.  If his ERA stays that low he is sure to pick up more victories along the way.
29 27
(-2)
1-7 (1-7) Pittsburgh is really hoping for a bounce-back season from Oliver Perez in 2006 and so far he hasn't delivered.  In his first two starts this season he is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in only 8.7 IP with 7 walks.
30 30
