Serious Baseball: Power Rankings

Welcome back to the Serious Baseball Power Rankings

This time around the Chicago White Sox stay at the top for the second consecutive week.  As for which team climbed up the most, there was a tie between the New York Yankees (7-3 in their last 10 games), and the Milwaukee Brewers (6-4 in their last 10 games), who both moved up five spots.  The team the dropped the furthest was the Boston Red Sox who fell eight spots thanks to a 3-7 showing in their last ten games.

It's nice to see the Kansas City Royals not in the last spot as the Pirates proudly proclaimed their spot as the worst team in baseball with a 2-8 showing in their last 10 games.

Anyhow, here they are:

It looks like the Angels still can't beat the White Sox.  In their three game sweep of Los Angeles, Chicago outscored the Angels 16-11; and on the season have outscored their opponents 140-96.

Jeff Suppan hasn't had the best of starts so far in 2006.  In four games started he is 1-2 with a 5.85 ERA and a 8/8 K/bB ratio in 20.0 IP.

The Reds set a team  record for victories in April by winning their seventeenth game of the month this past Saturday against the Houston Astros.

By losing to Cincinnati this past Friday Roy Oswalt suffered his first defeat at the hands of Reds in his entire career.  Until that game he had been 15-0 versus them all time.

On their recent nine-game road trip the Tigers starting pitchers posted a 2.89 ERA.  You'd think they'd have had a better record on the trip than 6-3, but their offense only scored 33 runs in that same period.

It's too bad the Mets had to place red-hot rookie Brian Bannister on the DL recently.  Up until he hurt himself running the bases this past week he was 2-0 in 28.0 IP with a 2.89 ERA.

By giving up the lead this past Friday against the Marlins in the ninth inning, Brian Fuentes blew his first save opportunity since last July.

Four full-time players have a .900+ OPS on the Rangers so far this season: Kevin Mench (1.026), Michael Young (.907), Phil Nevin (.943), and Hank Blalock (.925).

In his two starts this past week Randy Johnson hasn't looked anything like his old self even though he went 2-0.  In 13 innings pitched he had a 4.85 ERA and only struck out seven batters while walking five.

When Barry Bonds and Moises Alou are both in the lineup the Giants are 10-3 this season and 16-6 dating back to last season.

With the Red Sox failing to score runs by the bushel so far this season it would be easy to place the blame on the lack of a legitimate lead-off hitter with Coco Crisp on the DL.  But, that isn't the case as Kevin Youkilis has filled that role rather nicely posting a .438 OBP in 65 AB's from the number one spot.

By hitting his 10th HR this past Sunday in a victory against the Cubs Carlos Lee set a team record for HR's by a Brewer in the month of April.

Closer Bob Wickman dedicated his team record-tying 129th save (tied Doug Jones) to the Indians team doctors this past Friday night saying, "This is for all the doctors and trainers in Cleveland who helped me get back on the field when it looked like my career might be over."

Jacque Jones looked to break out of his early-season slump this past week by posting a 1.257 OPS in 18 AB and hitting 3 HR's.

The Orioles have four full-time players with a sub-.655 OPS so far this season: Kevin Millar (.648), Jeff Conine (.628), Nick Markakis (.546), and Javy Lopez (.651).

After posting a 10.24 ERA and walking seven batters in 9.7 IP this season Jason Frasor was demoted to Triple-A Syracuse.  This was very unexpected since Frasor was so good last season (3.25 ERA in 74.7 IP).

Jeff Weaver hasn't exactly been what the Angels we're hoping for when they signed him this past off-season.  So far this year he has a 7.48 ERA in 27.2 IP.  But his 20/7 K/bB ratio is indicative of a better future performance.

Man, Jeff Kent is struggling badly this April.  In 77 AB's so far in the month he has posted a .195/.326/.260 batting line and has hit only one HR.

Oakland could be in real trouble the next six to eight weeks when they will be without starting pitcher Rich Harden, who is on the DL .  Last season when he missed extended time due to injury the A's went 3-11 in the games started by his replacements.

Ty Wigginton seems to have finally cooled down this past week.  In 22 AB's he posted a .227/.250/.318 batting line and hit zero HR's.
21 24

12-13

Even though he is known as a "defense-first" second baseman, I'm sure the D-Backs weren't expecting Orlando Hudson to be this bad offensively: 93 AB, .237/.297/.323, 0 HR, 4 RBI.
22 19

Maybe his complete and utter lack of patience is finally catching up to Jeff Francouer.  In 2006, after 97 AB's he has drawn zero walks and has a .216/.230/.371 batting line.

By winning their recent series against the Orioles, the Mariners won their first series in Baltimore since 2001.

Before Gavin Floyd allowed one-run in 6 2/3 innings against the Pirates recently, he had the highest ERA (8.50) of the 56 qualifying pitchers in the NL for the statistic.

The Padres will be hoping they can repeat their performance from last May, this May.  Last season they went 22-6 in that month.

The Twins offense only managed to score one run against the Tigers in their recent three game set against them!

It's hard to believe Ryan Church started the season by being demoted to Triple A.  In his 41 AB's since he got re-called he has a 1.039 OPS, 4 HR, and 9 RBI

The Marlins have struck out 8.7 times per game so far in this young 2006 season--the highest mark in that category in the majors.

The A's recent sweep of the Royals shouldn't have come as a surprise to anybody.  Oakland has won 12 straight games against Kansas City since May, 31  2003.

By finishing the month with a 7-19 record, the Pirates successfully completed their fourth straight April with a losing record.
