ALDS: Yankees Twins game 3 recap, game 4 preview
by Daniel Paulling
October 9, 2004
The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins game wasnt
as interesting as the Angels/Red Sox, as no team did get eliminated,
but it was good in itself. The game was close in the beginning,
but as the game wore on, the Yankees pulled ahead. We got to see
a solid pitching outing by Kevin Brown and a gutsy comeback attempt
in the ninth.
The Scoring
The Twins scored in the first with a solo home run off the bat of
Jacque Jones against Kevin Brown. Mike Cuddyer, Jose Offerman, and
Shannon Stewart all drove in one run each, which came in the 9th
inning. The Yankees got a two run homer from Bernie Williams in
the 6th and Hideki Matsui in the 7th. Miguel
Cairo (1), Kenny Lofton (1), and Derek Jeter (3) all drove in runs.
The Pitching
Everyone was laughing at the prospect of Joe Torre starting
Kevin Brown in Game 3, saying that the rotation was terribly weak.
Well, Brownie pitched six innings with only one earned run. Paul
Quantrill and Mariano Rivera pitched a combined 2.2 innings. Felix
Heredia and Tanyon Sturtze pitched a combined .1 of an inning and
gave up three earned runs. The Yankees definitely needed a better
outing from their non-Mariano Rivera pitchers; Rivera did not need
to pitch in this game, but Torre had to bring him out anyway.
Preview for Game Four
The Yankees have a 2-1 series lead so they definitely need to end
it here. The Yankees send Javier Vazquez to the mound and there
are many questions surrounding him. Since the All Star Break, Vazzy
has an ERA over six. If he can get his mechanics down and repeat
them, he can definitely pitch as well as he should. The Twins send
Johan Santana to the mound on three days rest. Everyone knows the
statistics of guys sent to the mound on three days rest, so Im
not going to repeat them here, but they arent good. The Yankees
need to get Santanas pitch count up as quickly as possible
and not to be over aggressive. Catch the game at four oclock
on FOX.
